Our Approach to Change

Building a sustainable future for children in Ethiopia.

So, what are we facing?

The Reality for Children in Ethiopia

In Ethiopia’s capital city, tens of thousands of children live on the streets without safe housing, education, or consistent care. Many have lost parents or family support because of poverty, conflict, or illness.

When children grow up without stability, the effects ripple through their communities for generations. Our work begins here—meeting immediate needs while building systems that lead to lasting independence.

Our Beginning.

Founded in 2009 by Olympic runners Ryan and Sara Hall, The Hall Steps Foundation was born from a simple idea: that something as personal as running could create change on a global scale.

During their adoption journey in Ethiopia, Ryan and Sara saw the realities of poverty and the resilience of its people. They returned home determined to take their “step” and inspire others to do the same.

What began as a small community of runners raising funds for clean water and microloans has grown into a foundation focused on helping children in Ethiopia find safety, education, and opportunity.
