Our Impact

Building a sustainable future for children in Ethiopia.

The Reality for Children in Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s capital city, many children live on the streets without reliable access to food, shelter, or education. Most have lost parents or family support because of poverty, conflict, or illness.

When children grow up without stability, the effects ripple through their communities for generations. Our work begins here, meeting immediate needs while helping to build systems that create lasting independence..

Our Approach

Phase One

Safety

EEvery child deserves a safe place to sleep and a daily meal. We partner with local organizations to provide housing, nutrition, and consistent care.

Phase Two

Education

Once children are safe, they return to school or begin learning new skills. Education opens the door to independence.

Phase Three

Opportunity

Through mentorship and job training, young people gain the tools to thrive. Sustainable change begins when youth can build stable, self-sufficient lives.

The Hall Steps Foundation was established in 2009 to connect the running community with organizations tackling poverty and injustice. What began as a grassroots effort to fund clean water, microloans, and healthcare has evolved into a focused partnership model supporting children and families in Ethiopia.

Current Work

Our Partners in Ethiopia

We work with trusted, locally led organizations that understand their own communities and guide the work on the ground.

  • Based in Addis Ababa, Hope for the Fatherless provides care, housing, and family-based support for orphaned and vulnerable children. Together, we are helping youth move from the streets toward stability and independence through education and job training.

  • Through Kiva’s global microloan network, The Hall Steps Foundation has funded $414,050 in loans across East Africa, reaching 5,106 borrowers, 73 percent of them women. These small loans help families start businesses, achieve stability, and keep their children in school.

  • These partnerships have focused on family reunification, education, and care for children without stable homes. Each collaboration reinforces our commitment to strengthening local programs and leadership.

Results

Since 2009, supporters of The Hall Steps Foundation have helped fund more than $414,000 in microloans through Kiva, supporting 5,106 borrowers, 73 percent of them women. These small loans have allowed families to start businesses, achieve stability, and keep children in school.

Through partnerships with Hope for the Fatherless, Hope for the Hopeless, Make Your Mark, and Shamida Ethiopia, we have also supported programs focused on orphan care, education, and family reunification. Each partnership strengthens local organizations that continue to grow their own impact year after year.
